The Spark of Innovation
Maddox Prichard’s journey began in fourth grade with a gardening problem. Helping his mom and grandmother, he grew frustrated using both a tape measure and a shovel. “Why not combine them?” he thought. That simple, practical idea evolved into his first invention, The Measuring Shovel, a shovel with integrated measuring tools designed to simplify gardening.
The Tennessee Invention Convention gave Maddox his first opportunity to present his shovel concept publicly, and the feedback was overwhelmingly positive. From the state competition to U.S. Nationals, his invention gained recognition, eventually earning him the Stanley Black & Decker Manufacturing and Tools Award. Alongside mentors and supporters, Maddox continued to develop his idea, eventually earning a patent and even an opportunity to pitch it on Shark Tank.
Taking Risks and Embracing Challenges
Maddox’s invention journey hasn’t been without its obstacles. A promising licensing deal with Shark Tank producers fell through due to the timing of the COVID-19 pandemic, and subsequent attempts at prototyping were met with technical roadblocks. But for Maddox, these challenges are part of what fuels his determination. Now studying Animal and Dairy Science with a pre-vet focus, he’s looking to explore avenues through Mississippi State University’s entrepreneurship program, “Dawg Tank,” to bring his shovel invention to market.
His experience pitching to investors, overcoming manufacturing issues, and navigating intellectual property have laid a foundation for his aspirations as both a veterinarian and entrepreneur. The combination of problem-solving and hands-on work that he enjoys as a pre-vet student mirrors the innovative spirit that led him to invent.
Building Confidence and Skills through Invention Convention
Reflecting on his early days with Invention Convention, Maddox credits the program with building skills that have become invaluable in college and beyond. “Every time I’m nervous before an interview, I just remind myself: I was on Shark Tank,” he laughs, noting the confidence that pitching his product instilled in him.
Invention Convention didn’t just boost his self-assurance; it also taught him critical public speaking and networking skills. “You’ve got to pitch yourself and your product,” he explained, drawing a parallel to his interviews for scholarships and academic programs. These skills, he believes, were instrumental in earning him a spot in Mississippi State’s early-entry vet program and the prestigious Presidential Scholarship.
Giving Back: Maddox’s Commitment to the Next Generation
Maddox remains deeply involved with the Invention Convention program, returning each year to the Tennessee Invention Convention to serve as a judge or keynote speaker. “It’s rewarding to see the kids’ excitement when they win and to be part of their journey,” he shares. As an alum, he is passionate about giving back to the community that supported him, aiming to offer the same encouragement and mentorship that shaped his own path.
His commitment to the program also stems from a desire to support its leader, Dr. Tracey Huddleston, whom he credits with encouraging him at every step. “I wouldn’t be here without her,” he says, underscoring the importance of the Invention Convention community in his journey.
Looking to the Future
Maddox’s ambitions are not limited to veterinary medicine; he has a clear entrepreneurial vision as well. Inspired by his Invention Convention experience, he hopes to open his own veterinary practice after graduation, relishing the opportunity to be his own boss. For Maddox, entrepreneurship means “being in charge of your success” and constantly striving to reach the next level—a mindset that he cultivated as a young inventor and carries into his future.
Through his invention journey, Maddox has become an inspiring example for other young inventors. By combining his love for animals and innovative spirit, he is paving the way for a rewarding career and embodying the impact that Invention Convention can have on students.
