Alumni Spotlight: Jonathan Walker’s Journey from Student Inventor to Impactful Mentor

  • August 12, 2025

At Invention Convention Worldwide, we believe that innovation doesn’t stop after K-12 — it evolves. Our alumni go on to accomplish incredible things, and Jonathan Walker is a shining example of how the lessons learned in our program can shape a lifetime of creativity, problem-solving and camaraderie. A senior at Duke University, Jonathan has inspired many with his journey from a student inventor to a passionate mentor and advocate.

A Student Inventor Driven By Compassion

Jonathan’s journey with Invention Convention began when he was in 10th grade, when he started participating in the Independent Inventor Program in Florida. Motivated by his compassion for others, Jonathan recognized that participating in Invention Convention gave him an opportunity and a platform to solve real-world issues. Over the course of his time with the program, he developed a number of groundbreaking inventions – all of which addressed real-life challenges, from accessibility to the environment.

One of his earliest projects was TactCell Refreshable Braille Device, created alongside his partner Alex Johnson. Together, they created a wrist-wearable device designed for individuals who are blind or deaf. The device converted spoken words into text and then into tactile braille, allowing for seamless communication. Jonathan also invented Bio.Mit Internal Combustion Engine Filter, a car filter that aimed to reduce emissions from internal combustion engines. The innovative filter incorporated algae to absorb carbon dioxide and photosynthesize oxygen, essentially acting as a mechanical tree. This environmentally focused invention showcased Jonathan’s ability to merge science and sustainability, leading to national recognition.

Throughout his journey as a student inventor, Jonathan prioritized empathy and the needs of others as the “why” behind his inventions. “I invented because I saw problems close to me, and Invention Convention gave me an actionable way to address those problems and create a difference when I thought I couldn't before,” Jonathan says. “To be able to notice the pain of people, of the environment, of anything I love, and know that I can take steps forward to alleviate that pain through inventing... that empowerment is liberating, and it continues to serve me to this day.”

Giving Back to the Invention Convention Community

Now an Invention Convention alumnus, Jonathan considers his experiences with inventing through the program to be “life-changing” – both for himself as the inventor and for those who benefitted from his innovations. After graduating high school, Jonathan felt dedicated to helping other young inventors have the same opportunities and experiences that he did. “It's upsetting to know there's so many students with so much potential to make an impact in their local communities, but don't have the opportunity,” Jonathan explains.

As an alumnus, he has given back in numerous ways in hopes of creating more opportunities for young inventors and encouraging students to invent. Jonathan has served as a student reporter, mentored young inventors and spoken on national panels, and he sits on the advisory board for Invention Convention Worldwide. His insights and experiences help shape the future of the program, ensuring that today’s young inventors have the same life-changing opportunities he had. Through his commitment to Invention Convention, Jonathan hopes that young inventors learn that “no problem has to be seen as too small anymore.”

“These problems can all be solved by the people who see and experience them, and this is the investment I strive to make by giving back to the Invention Education ecosystem.”

For Jonathan, it’s all about community. “Invention Convention is a family. Every time I return to U.S. Nationals, I’m excited to see everyone, meet new people and experience the incredible energy of young inventors solving real-world problems.” He firmly believes that fostering the next generation of problem solvers is crucial and he is committed to supporting students as they develop their own innovative solutions.

Advice to Fellow Alumni: Stay Connected and Harness the Power of Inventing

Jonathan has a powerful message for fellow alumni who may not be currently engaged with Invention Convention: Your journey as an inventor isn’t over. The problems of the world need innovative minds, and staying connected to this community can help you refine your skills, collaborate on ideas and inspire the next generation. “Inventors are rare,” he says. “When you step outside the Invention Convention ecosystem, you realize how unique this mindset is.” While the rarity of the inventor’s mindset to solve problems may feel discouraging, Jonathan reminds Invention Convention inventors and alumni that their unique perspective has power.

“The world needs problem solvers, and as alumni, we have a responsibility to give back, mentor and support those coming after us. If we continue to foster this community, we create a rising tide that lifts all boats. Now, you have a ripe opportunity to be around others who continue to push the inventor’s mindset. Together, you can attack the world's biggest problems in innovative ways. This isn't something cool that you have to watch from the sidelines. This is something you’re ready to actively be involved in!”

Inventing Our Future

Soon to be completing his undergraduate studies in interdisciplinary engineering — a major he designed himself — Jonathan is looking forward to taking a gap year to invent full time before he returns to Duke University for a master’s program. As he moves forward in this next chapter, his passion for using his problem-solving and innovation skills to improve the world remains unwavering. Whether he is developing new business applications, developing new technologies or mentoring the next wave of young innovators, he is committed to keeping one key phrase at the center of everything he does: “Build tables for those who were never given a seat at the table.” For Jonathan, it’s all about creating platforms and opportunities to empower people of all backgrounds and experiences to contribute to solving real-world problems.

Jonathan’s story serves as a testament to the lifelong impact of Invention Convention Worldwide as a community that empowers future generations to “Invent it Forward” and to invent the change they want to see in the world. To all our inventors, past and present: Your journey is just beginning. Stay involved, stay curious and keep inventing.
